Facebook-The Social Phenomenon of our Times

As the much-maligned,yet much loved and finally inescapable online social networking phenomenon of our times Facebook hardly needs an introduction. While similar services such as orkut and mySpace have,at various times, held sway in their respective quarters, none has approached the almost universal appeal of Facebook.

Facebook was founded on 4th Feb,2004, by the Mark Zuckerberg and his fellow Harvard University students. Its name comes from a student directory that is given to students in American universities, which is designed to help them recognize and relate to each other. The founders of Facebook had initially limited the website’s Facebook’s) membership to harvard students only, but later expanded it to include colleges in Boston area,Ivy League, and the Stanford University. As its popularity grew, support for students at various other universities was gradually added. Finally,it opened to high-school students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over.
The features of Facebook and their presentation on the website have undergone considerable changes over the years. However, certain basic features remain the mainstay of Facebook.

originally, this used to be the space where a Facebook member’s profile contents would be displayed. It allowed the posting of messages, updates, pictures, etc.
The Wall was replaced by Timeline, which chronologically categorises all postings, including messages, pictures, and videos. An option to hide posts from the timeline was recently introduced in 2014.

This is the process by which a Facebook user sends another a ‘friend’ request and the other accepts it,thereby making them friends in virtual space.’Unfriending’ is an option given to users to exercise when they want to stop being ‘friends’ with other users on Facebook.

Originally, when users logged into Facebook, they were presented with a customizable version of their own profile.Newsfeed, this in contrast ,provides an alternative home page in which users see a constantly updated list of their friends Facebook activity.Newsfeed highlights information that includes profile changes, status updates,’Likes’,comments by friends on posts, upcoming events,Recent disaster safe marking, birthdays and alot more updates.

Users can ‘like’ status updates, comments, photos and links posted by their friends,as well as advertisements,by clicking the ‘Like’ button at the bottom of such content.
A Facebook user and send a message to any number of his/her friends at a time.Deleting a message from one user’s inbox will not delete it from the inbox of other users.
Notifications inform the user that an addition has been made to his or her profile page.

One of the most popular applications on Facebook is the photos application, where users upload albums of photos, tag friends helped by facial recognition technology and comment on photos.

FacebookGroups can be created by individual users.Groups allow members to post content such as links, media, questions, events, editable documents, and comments on these items.

Facebookevents are a way for members to let friends know about upcoming events in their community and to organize events in their community and to organize social gatherings.Events require name of event, network host name, event type(singing, part, competition etc),start time, location, and a guest list of friends invited.

Facebookenables users or members of Facebook to choose their own privacy settings and choose who can see specific parts of their profile.Users can control who can see other information they have shared,as well as who can find them in searches, through their privacy settings.
